Breaking Barriers, Bringing Japanese Theater To The World

ABOUT:

Rooted in Japan, Ready for Your Stage.

Established in 2020 during Japan’s first pandemic-related theater shutdowns, this organization began as a survey on the impact of cancellations and grew into a nationwide network.
Legalized in 2021, it now unites over 250 members as Japan’s leading cross-sector network driving sustainable growth in the performing arts.

1.

Our Initiative

Expanding Global Access through the Digital Space

  • Expanding Access to Japanese Works Globally and Locally
  • Analyzing Industry Trends and Market Needs

SOIL serves as a neutral platform that supports the international presence of Japanese performing arts by offering accessible information on selected works through its official website. As a project led by JPASN—an umbrella organization representing a wide array of companies, genres, and voices from across Japan—we strive to create an inclusive and open environment where diverse creators can be discovered and engaged by international partners. Rather than promoting a single aesthetic or agenda, SOIL provides the tools and visibility needed for each production to pursue its own unique path toward global collaboration and roll-out.

2.

Our Initiative

Elevating Japanese Performing Arts on the Global Stage

  • Showcasing Japanese Performing Arts as a Cultural Brand
  • Supporting Artists and Companies through International Engagement
  • Curating and Selecting Works for Global Appeal

In addition to presenting works at renowned events such as the Fringe Festival,in Edinburgh, we actively participate in international performing arts markets through booth exhibitions and pitch sessions. These on-the-ground promotional efforts help to elevate the global visibility of Japanese theater. By streamlining participation processes and supporting companies through every step, we aim to strengthen the international reputation of Japan’s performing arts sector.

3.

Our Initiative

Building International Capacity through Shared Knowledge and Networks

  • Providing Up-to-Date Information on Global Performing Arts Events
  • Offering Translation and Communication Support
  • Facilitating Cross-Cultural Partnerships

We build networks and develop know-how essential for overseas engagement, through our international delegation programs and training opportunities. By sharing these resources openly with artists and organizations in Japan, we help to lower the barriers to international collaboration. From logistical support to language assistance, our aim is to empower more creators to confidently navigate the global performing arts landscape.
