Musical
“In This Corner
of the World”

WORKS:

Overview:

The musical “In This Corner of the World” is an original musical based on a manga series by Fumiyo Kono, and was first premiered at the Nissay Theatre in May 2024. It is the story of people who lived in Kure City, Hiroshima during World War II. However, it does not vividly depict the horrors of the war. Instead, it illustrates the horror by carefully depicting the modest and beautiful lives lived during the war. The year 2025 marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War, and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This musical is filled with prayers for peace and it is done in the most delicate and gentle way that only we Japanese can do. We believe it is our mission to bring this musical to the utterly chaotic world of today.

Synopsis:

July, 1945—Kure, Japan. Lying quietly on her futon, Suzu’s mind begins to drift. Memories of time spent with loved ones rise to the surface, and slowly, each recollection comes to life once more.

Raised peacefully between the Hiroshima seaside towns of Eba and Kusatsu, Suzu grew up surrounded by her father, Juro, a seaweed farmer; her mother, Kiseno; her brother, Yoichi; her younger sister, Sumi; and her grandmother, Ito. In February 1944, she marries into the Hojo family in Tadanoumi, a hillside neighborhood in Kure, about 30 kilometers from Eba.

There, she begins a new life with her quiet husband, Shusaku; his warm-hearted parents, Entaro and San; and her sister-in-law Keiko, recently estranged from her late husband’s family, along with Keiko’s daughter, Harumi.

As war tightens its grip, daily life becomes increasingly constrained. Yet Suzu navigates the days with resilience, helping and being helped by neighbors. Amid the hardships, she finds small joys—a rare date with Shusaku, a chance encounter with Shiroki Rin at the Futaba House, a reunion with her childhood friend Tetsu Mizuhara, now a sailor.

Then, on March 19, 1945, Kure is bombed for the first time.

Even as life grows harsher, everyone continues on—each in their own place, each holding onto the rhythms of daily life.

Concept:

-Globally Beloved Stories in Musical Form
The original manga achieved high acclaim both domestically and internationally, including the receiving the Excellence Award in the Manga Division at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival, with the movie winning the Jury Award (runner-up) in the Feature Film Category at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, often called the "Cannes of Animation." This moving story is delivered to the audience as a brand-new musical experience.

-Music: A Fusion of Japanese Sensibility and Broadway musical methods
Angela Aki, a native Japanese speaker, infuses this grand musical with Broadway methods cultivated in New York. The music, while dynamic, also possesses a delicate Japanese aesthetic, enriching the world of the production.

-Musical made in Japan
In the creative process of this production, which depicts the Pacific War including the atomic bombing, it was essential to draw out as much as possible the gentle and subtle sensibilities unique to the Japanese people without the use of interpreters. This production is a Japanese musical committed to "authenticity" featuring an all-Japanese cast and production team including 6 principals, 19 ensemble members, and a 13-member orchestra.
