ORB:
ON THE MOVEMENTS
OF THE EARTH
WORKS:

Overview:
Orb: On the Movement of the Earth began serialisation in the manga magazine Big Comic Spirits in 2020, and quickly gained nationwide acclaim. It earned second place in the Manga Taisho 2021 awards and won the prestigious 26th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for Best Manga, cementing its place as a critically acclaimed work. Readers were captivated by its gripping dialogue and unpredictable, dynamic story turns. The anime adaptation also generated significant buzz. The stage production is directed by Avshalom Pollak, known for the musical The Cat That Lived a Million Times and the Hyakki Opera Rashomon. Together with playwright Keishi Nagatsuka, he has transformed the manga's unique charm to a live performance. Composer Umitaro Abe and choreographer Ella Rothschild, both internationally acclaimed creators, are joined by a talented and remarkably athletic cast. Through a seamless fusion of physical expression, drama, music, and performance, a new vision of Orb is introduced.

Synopsis:
In 15th-century Europe, C religion governed every aspect of daily life in the Kingdom of P. Any idea that defied its teachings was condemned as heresy and were met with torture and brutal execution.
One day, Rafal the twelve-year-old prodigy, encounters a man who dares to propose a forbidden idea: heliocentrism. Captivated by the laws of the cosmos, Rafal is drawn ever deeper into its study through relentless intellectual pursuit, until he catches the eye of Nowak, a feared inquisitor.
As time passes, Rafal's beliefs are passed on, carried on by those who follow him. Meanwhile, Nowak grows ever more relentless in his hunt for heretics.
The story depicts people who are driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge , willing to risk their very lives in pursuit of truth. Through the flow of history, belief becomes the thread that binds them together.

Concept:
Orb portrays people who were utterly consumed by a desire to uncover the truth about the Earth. They put their lives at risk on that pursuit in 15th-century Europe, when the world was governed by the geocentric belief that God created the Earth as the center of the universe. At its heart, the work explores the significance of questioning the obvious, and the power of human conviction driven by the profound joy of discovery.
Avshalom Pollak turns the story into a unique theatrical performance while maintaing the themes of the original work at its core. Through Ella Rothschild's choreography, the inner transformations of the human heart, the shifting of thought, and the movement of the Earth itself are depicted through the movements of the performers. Umitaro Abe's original and otherworldly score expresses the denial of geocentrism as a sanctified, unquestionable doctrine. Costume design by Tamae Hirokawa draws from the 15th-century world of the original manga, weaving in a futuristic sensibility and Japanese aesthetic to create designs that embody each character's individual image.
The set design by Yukio Horio takes the Noh stage as its conceptual foundation, incorporating elements such as the hashigakari passageway and age-maku curtain. In Noh tradition, the stage is a place where the living and the dead meet, a perfect place to depict the story where the heliocentric truth is passed down, even after death. A single tree appearing on stage is inspired by the pine painted on the kagami-ita backboard in Noh, a symbol of the divine and the sacred. Rafal, who carries the heliocentric belief forward, moves the tree as a meataphor of the transformation of thought.

Company Profile:
Since launching theatre productions in 1981 with Peter Pan starring Ikue Sakakibara, HoriPro has grown into one of Japan's most prominent theatre producers, leading the industry for over four decades. International tours of works directed by Yukio Ninagawa, including Shintokumaru, Musashi, and Kafka on the Shore, and both a Korean-cast production and London concert of Death Note The Musical has earned the company widespread acclaim on the world stage.
In recent years, the company has continued to expand on multiple fronts: producing original works such as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, I Am Shingo, Nakamura Nakazō, and Future Boy Conan; staging large-scale licensed productions including Mary Poppins; and achieving a successful long run of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, bringing world-class theatre to audiences across a broad and diverse range of programming.
The Chinese licensed production of the two-person musical 'Shirotsumesa' is currently playing an open run at a dedicated theater in Shanghai.
