HAMLET

Concept:

Hamlet is known as the first work in art history to focus on the anguish of the modern self. This performance uses Hamlet's story as the foundation, while turning its gaze toward non-human life forms, portraying the resonance and circulation between humanity and nature through the physical movements of performers.

Our society advanced by severing the connection between human beings and nature, approaching all things through rational thought, but now it has reached an impasse. Humanity stands at a turning point from an era in which we lived within a great cosmos directly bound to nature. The production draws attention to the aspect of Hamlet in which the modern and the pre-modern intermingle, posing questions about human supremacy and intellectual supremacy.
On a simple stage covered only in vinyl, performers who imagine and comit to the senses of animals and plants, and performers embodying the characters of Hamlet, appear at the same time. Characters who have long been pushed to the margins of a society that privileges language and logic, such as women (Ophelia in particular), gravediggers, and travelling performers, are brought vividly to life. Meanwhile, Hamlet and Horatio, who think and reason through words, are relativised and re-presented. In doing so, the work gradually draws the audience's awareness toward the different systems of value that surround us.
